At the end of April, Marisa attended the Canadian Special Event Awards representing the Heart of Gold Committee who plans the bi-annual Heart of Gold Gala, alongside the KGH Foundation The gala had been nominated for Best Large-Scale Fundraiser in Canada. It was a whirlwind trip, and a phenomenal event, with so many amazing teams nominated for some incredible awards. The Heart of Gold Gala did not take home the award this year however it was impressive even among the top 5 events in Canada. The main winner was the community with over $2.1 million raised for Cancer Care at KGH. Check back in 2026 to see what Marisa and the team raise!
This May, Curtis help organize and played in the 4th annual "Average Player Who Gives A Puck" hockey tournament. The 48 participants were split into 6 teams and took part in a full day of activities including a 9 hole golf tournament and a 3 on 3 hockey tournament. The event raised money and awareness for the Central Okanagan Food Bank. Unfortunately there is a growing demand on our food bank with the Kelowna location serving between 8,000-8,500 individuals each month. If you would like to learn more about the Central Okanagan Food Bank or wish to find out how to support them yourself please check out the link below;
Last night Jason and Curtis had the opportunity to come together with 60 other local financial professionals to compete in a cooking competition for raise money for JoeAnna's House. This event was organized and host by our friend and colleague here at RBC Dominion Securities Cairy Holtby. The event was brought together financial advisors from all different firms across the Okanagan and raised over $35,000 for JoeAnna's house. We were divided into 10 teams of 6 and we had 45 minutes to cook a meal with four mystery ingredients. We had a lot of laughs and some good spirited competition all while raising money for an amazing cause. If you wish to learn more about JoeAnna's House and how they serve the entire interior community please check out the link below.
This year I was recognized by Kelowna Minor Hockey Association with the Most Promising Coach of the Year Award. It was an honor to be chosen for this award. It was an amazing year full of great memories and I look forward to this fall to do it all over again.
I can not believe another hockey season has come and gone. I was fortunate enough to head coach four teams this year. Through those four teams I got the chance meet some new kids and families while strengthen my relationship with our returning players and parents. With some many games, practices, tournaments and road trips there are too many highlights to mention them all. I am proud of all the players on each of the teams by how far they have grown as both hockey players and members of the community. I want to say thank you to all families involved and i look forward to seeing you around the arena this fall.

This week, Marisa volunteered alongside some RBC Dominion Securities colleagues at the Central Okanagan Food Bank. For the past 6 weeks, our office has been collecting items and monetary donations to give to our Kelowna Central Okanagan Food Bank, followed by a day of volunteer at their location. Our food bank is a central distribution hub for 30+ food banks located in the Interior. Many amazing local grocery stores donate food items, one being eggs. These eggs may have been over looked due to small cracks or maybe one has fully cracked in a package. The food bank takes those eggs, sorts them, cleans the non-damaged eggs, repackages them and gives them to many families that need them. For the eggs that don't make the cut, they are donated back to many local farms who's animals thoroughly enjoy them! Our job yesterday was to sort and clean those eggs, we sorted approx. 1700 eggs! RBC Dominion Securities gathered a large bin full of food, along with over $3000 in donations!
This past weekend Marisa hosted along with her committee members, the Heart of Gold Gala, which was a resounding success, raising approximately $2.1 million for KGH's surgical oncology department. Held in a stunning venue, the event brought together a dedicated community to support the fight against cancer. A night filled with inspiring speeches, live entertainment, and a high-energy auction, the gala highlighted the collective effort to advance cancer care. The funds raised will support cutting-edge research, new technologies, and enhanced patient care, making a significant impact on the lives of those battling cancer. Marisa & committee member Kristi Wensley organized 25 RBC volunteers to aid in making the night such a huge success.
Marisa and a colleague, Michelle, volunteered a few hours of their time to the KGH Foundation Day of Giving this year. They spent 2 hours answering the phones and taking donations, during their two hour slot they took in over $23,000 of donations. Every gift that was received on May 15th until midnight was matched and the Foundation closed their day with a total of $927,707.07. Click here to read more!
