Meet our team
Many families and businesses are losing money unknowingly and unnecessarily through taxes, negative returns, and the way they finance major capital purchases. We would be happy to take you through our process to see if we can be of help.

Our Philosophy: Protect the Tree, Live off the Fruit

Your wealth is like an apple tree. The tree represents your capital, and the apples are the income and growth it produces.

At Kirkpatrick Wealth Management our mission is simple: protect the tree so your family can enjoy the fruit, for generations.

If what you thought to be true about money, turned out not to be true, when would you want to know about it?

For most of us, the answer is we would want to know right away. We would love to connect with you to understand your situation and how we could be of help to you. In the meantime, please watch our videos to learn what we believe and how we help and serve our clients.

Our beliefs

Picture your financial life as a bucket. Water flows in from many sources, income, business profits, investment returns, dividends, rental income, and more. Families and business owners often ask, "what is the most efficient way to fill the bucket?"

Yet at the same time, money is quietly draining out, unnecessarily and unknowingly, through the 3 hidden financial leaks.

The Three Hidden Financial Leaks

Taxes

Paying more than required.

Market or sequence risk

Negative returns interrupting the compounding of your money.

Financing cost or capital transfer

The constant transfer of capital away from your family, permanently giving up the ability to earn interest on that money.

Even when families pour more in by chasing higher returns, timing the market, or buying the next hot product, the leaks remain. The problem isn't the inflow it's the outflow.

We believe that there is more opportunity in avoiding losses than in chasing gains. Plugging the leaks and keeping more water in your bucket is the foundation of lasting wealth.

Once done, it becomes much easier to fill your financial bucket and to keep it full.

A disciplined process is the key

Kirkpatrick Wealth Management of RBC Dominion Securities follows a disciplined seven-step process to keep you on-track to achieving your goals. A disciplined process keeps everyone focused on what’s important—helping you live life the way you want.

What we do

We help business owners and families understand the three financial leaks when it comes to growing wealth:

- Taxes eroding your wealth

- Negative returns interrupting the compounding of your wealth

- The constant transfer of capital away from your family/business thus permanently giving up the ability to earn interest on this money

Understanding these is important because if you do not understand the problem, the solution is not going to do you any good. Furthermore, if you understand the problem, you will know what you need to do.

We then take clients through our seven-step process.

How we do it

In our seven-step process to helping our clients become wealth creators, we:

1. Encourage you to read Becoming Your Own Banker and Michael’s book: Apple Seed to Apple Orchard.

2. Identify the three financial leaks.

3. Update your net worth and tax liability projections.

4. Work with you to decide if you would like to Increase, Flatten or Reduce (IFR) your current and future tax liability.

5. Identify the mindset and tools you need to become a wealth creator.

6. Determine the funding strategy.

7. Design your tax-exempt insurance strategy and implement it by working closely with our extended team of RBC specialists.

Our Investment Philosophy

Our Investment Management Process will give you an understanding for how we make decisions and how we manage your money.

Mortgage Considerations and The Smith ManoeuvreTM

Mortgage Considerations and The Smith ManoeuvreTM

True or false?

Many commonly held beliefs about mortgages feel intuitive, but are they actually true?

• Making extra principal payments saves you money.

• A large down payment will save you more money over time than a small down payment.

• A 15-year amortization will save more money over time than a 30-year amortization.

 • The interest rate is the main factor to consider when choosing a mortgage.

 • You are more secure having your house paid off than financed 100%.

These assumptions are rarely questioned, yet they shape some of the biggest financial decisions people make.

If what you believe to be true about mortgages turned out not to be, when would you want to know it?

Contact us to explore these questions and understand how mortgage decisions fit into a broader tax-efficient wealth strategy.
