A reflection on being Humble vs Modest

A spectacular Saturday afternoon run - crisp air and meandering thoughts.

As I ran, my mind drifted back to a Friday afternoon coffee conversation.

A story shared - about a distinguished Ottawa colleague I never had the opportunity to meet - told by a deeply close friend.

Before placing judgment, I’ve learned: there’s always a story behind the story. That conversation stirred something in me - a reflection on humble versus modest.

Humble is grounded in gratitude. It’s the quiet confidence to serve, give, and contribute without needing the spotlight.

Modest, though often well-intentioned, can sometimes keep us small - hesitant to acknowledge our full value or the ripple effect of our actions.

This person touched so many lives. Supported so many causes. All without seeking recognition. That’s humility in motion.

It reminded me - it’s what we do when no one’s watching that truly defines us.

Integrity lives there, in the unseen choices.

When I lay my head on my pillow at night, I ask myself: Have I made the best decisions possible - with the information, time, and resources I had?

And where might I still be limiting myself - chasing results instead of impact?
